our interests and areas of expertise. Our customized services include:
Historical and genealogical research
|

|
- We work on-site at repositories
in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode
Island and Vermont—state archives, U.S. National Archives
(Northeast regional branch), courthouses, libraries, and other
public and private collections.
- We also have desk-top
access to an extensive library of electronic
databases—legal, historical,
genealogical and
scholarly—for research
from colonial to modern times.
- We handle everything
from quick record look-ups to in-depth studies. Or for
clients who wish to do most of their own research, we
can serve as an expert advisor, suggesting lines of
inquiry and identifying pertinent resources.

Transcribing, editing and
indexing historical records
- We have substantial experience reading early
American handwriting and decoding abbreviations and arcane
terminology, especially in court records and legal manuscripts.
- We keep abreast of methods and issues in
historical editing, indexing and archives management through
membership in national and New England professional
associations.
Writing, editing and indexing family, community and
organizational histories
- Our slogan—We bring the past to life—is
especially applicable to our writing services. We excel at
uncovering intriguing facts about people, places and events from
the past and presenting those stories in a way that will engage
and instruct the target audience. We believe that historical
writing can—and should—be interesting, while adhering to the
highest standards of scholarship.
- We will present the story of your family,
organization, locality or other historical subject in whatever
format best suits your needs—from timelines and brief histories
(for articles, brochures, museum displays, historic site
interpretation or website content) to book-length histories.
- We also offer editing and indexing services
for your manuscripts, and we can arrange for layout, design and
publication of books through our affiliated publishing company,
Quill Pen Press, LLC.
Litigation support
- Like historians, lawyers need to be effective
storytellers, able to weave documentary evidence about past
events into an accurate, understandable narrative. As John
Quincy Adams’ character said in a memorable line from the movie
Amistad: “In the courtroom, whoever tells the best story
wins.”
- We can help law firms and their clients when
historical research is needed to prepare a case for trial or
appeal. Our principal consultant is a licensed attorney with
substantial litigation experience, so we understand the legal
process and can offer a range of services: document location and
analysis, preparation of reports and legal briefs, and expert
witness testimony.
Teacher training and curriculum development
- We can work with educators at schools,
libraries, museums and historic sites to customize training in:
using court records and primary sources in the classroom;
incorporating local history into colonial American studies; or
telling the stories of little-known African Americans, Native
Americans, and others who played a role in early New England
history.
-
We can assist in developing curriculum guides, lesson plans, and
bibliographies on similar topics, or in writing grant applications.
Lectures and workshops
-
We also present illustrated lectures, workshops and special
events—at your location and tailored to the interests of your audience.
